Exiting 2011

Thank heavens 2011 is ending. Please, Lord, make 2012 more fun. I am so glad to have Mr. A in our lives (and I admit that 2011 brought him to us), but the rest of it sucked. No sleep, bed bugs, break in, broken ribs, etc, etc. Mike and I are ready to put it behind us. But before we do, let's catch up on the kids.

Anders cut his first tooth (bottom front right) on Dec. 31 and is working on the other bottom front tooth.  He was pretty cranky about the whole thing; but as my sister pointed out, he is relatively pleasant even then.  Anders is rolling over with some ease and frequency.  However, if people are around, he is more likely to fuss until you turn him over.  He is also moving from 3 to 2 naps a day (9:15-10:15am and 2-3:30pm), though his afternoon nap can takes a little coaxing (see below).  At night, he goes to sleep around 7:30pm, has a feeding around 3am, and wakes up between 6 and 7am.

In the picture below, you will notice Anders is fully contained in the Pack 'n' Play.  That is because he has become Destructor McBaby.  If there is an item in front of him, he will grab it and throw/drop it.  And he is not aware of his limitations when he sets his eyes on something.  So the other day, he was taking blocks and beads out of a wooden step-stool that has a little storage area in it.  He then pulls the whole thing (which weighs a good 5 lbs) over, picks it up and slams it down, and then starts to pull himself up to his knees.  It didn't work, of course; and he toppled over hitting his head on the corner of the coffee table.  Therefore, for the protection of Anders and all others, we have to jail him.

Ellis has gotten interested in music.  She has some favorite songs: "Bad Day" by Daniel Powter; "G-d Bless the Child" by Billie Holiday; and "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" by Elton John.  She also really likes "Peter and the Wolf" by Sergei Prokofiev, which was introduced in her music class at school.  During her bath one night, I was asking her about school, which is not easy.  I have to enter into a series of questions to get anything out of her:
Beth: "What did you do after I left?"
Ellis: "Meeting time."
Beth: "What did you talk about during meeting time?"
Ellis: "Animals."
Beth: "What did you do after meeting time?"
Ellis: "Center play."
Beth: "And in which center did you play?"
Ellis: "Drawing."
Beth: "And what did you do after that?"
Blah, blah, blah...

So she finally says this: "We heard Peter play in Mr. Pope's class."  Mr. Pope is the music teacher.  At first I thought some guy names Peter played piano for them or something.  But finally she mentioned a wolf and I put it together.  We then pulled up the version narrated by David Bowie and listened over and over.  We have also recently taken on the "Sorcerer and his Apprentice" and "Carnival of the Animals."
Ellis also continues to draw fervently and impresses us often.  Below is a picture she drew in her room for 30 minutes.  She grabbed a piece of scrap paper and a ball point pen, sat on the toy box in her room, looked around the room and drew this.  You will see a book case and books, her castle and dolls, a window and doors, and Ellis jumping on her bed (a favorite activity).  I asked her about the hair, and she said it was messy because she just woke up.  It really is impressive.
