President-Elect Obama

Wow. What a night. Ellis was joined by her friends Maeve and Maisie to usher in a new era for our country. After the babies were all in bed, the election was called and we were happy. We spent the evening with good friends, which made the whole thing even more joyful.

It was amazing to be in our neighborhood last night. Columbia Heights and the U Street areas of DC were formally known as Uptown, which was one a vibrant center of black culture in DC. It was ravaged by the riots following the assassination of MLK. This area slowly started to come back when new Metro stops were added in the area about 10 years ago. And the last 5 years have included amazing revitalization, with the return of urban DINKs and families of all races with kids. Last night, there were fireworks, horns honking and a spontaneous multiracial celebration at 14th and U, about 15 blocks from our house and at the epicenter of Duke Ellington's Washington and the riots in the 60s. What a change. What a rebirth. It was beyond beautiful.

Beth, you not only talk the talk, but also walk the walk. Whether it is campaigning for Obama or acting as a tutor and mentor to urban kids, you are pretty much the only person I know who has taken real, concrete steps to affect positive change in your community.

More than that, the fact that you are able to balance all of that and motherhood is amazing to me. The example you have set for Ellis deserves our praise.

I think the picute of you leaping into Mike's arms is a marvelous one. There is obvious joy and passion in it, and I think that is so wonderful. Kudos to a well-deserved and well-earned victory.
