At the Farmers' Market

These pictures capture perfectly what we love about our neighborhood and why I (Beth) love my job. Let me explain. At work, I am heading up the Secretary's livable communities initiative. What is a livable community, you ask? You can get the official description from EPA's page on their partnership with DOT and HUD. Or I can describe it in terms of the farmers' market.

It is one in which enough people live close enough together that family farmers can come to the center of your neighborhood and attract enough business to make a living (and not sell out to a corporate farm or a developer). It is a community where there is a town center for the market to locate and it is easily accessible without having to get into a car. It is where people from all income levels, ages and ethnicities live and mingle, and you run into friends/neighbors on the street. All of these things exist in my neighborhood.

We go to the local farmers' market (8 blocks away) each weekend. It also attracts local musical groups. Ellis loved the bluegrass group that played this past weekend and danced for a while. They thanked her for adding so much to their act.
