Fireworks and 1776

For the 4th, Ellis and I went to the Freedkopfs for a cookout. Dinner was out of this world. Of course, we have the typical grilled goodies that one eats on the 4th. But I added a cucumber and shrimp gazpacho (recipe courtesy of Kathy and James), Josh made a blueberry pie that was unbelievable and Rina baked a peach cobbler and brought homemade ginger ice cream. If you know Rina then you know the baked goods are always crazy good, so I won't waste time with the superlatives the food deserves. I was more beached than full.

After dinner and a bath, we watched the concert and the fireworks at the Capitol on PBS. Ellis was transfixed by the light show. The fireworks sparkled as the sun went down over the Potomac creating a rainbow-hued sky. Today was supposed to be scorching hot, but it turned out to be a lovely summer's day -- hot and dry, with a bit of a breeze. Ellis hit a few random buttons on the stereo a week ago and now the TV plays through the stereo, so the music filled the room while fireworks popped outside the house.

After the national fireworks, Ellis fell asleep on the couch, in spite of the local, neighborhood fireworks show. Somehow they seem to accompany the movie I was watching (1776).

For the last few nights, Ellis and I have been listing all the people who love her before she goes to bed, something my mother did with me when I was little. Then this morning, on the way to meet Mary, Craig and Maeve at the pool, Ellis said, "Let's count all the people who love me. Mommy loves me, and Daddy loves me and Tante loves me..." And through the family she went.
