A Few Days Away

Mike and I went to New York City for a few days, just the two of us, to celebrate his 40th birthday. My wonderful father came to DC to stay with Ellis. I won't pretend that I wasn't worried about this -- it was our first time away from Ellis together. But things went swimmingly.

We stayed in Times Square to be close to our first destination -- "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart." Thanks to a high school friend and my mother, we got tickets to a show and were allowed to wait in the "VIP room" (more like a dorm common area) instead of in the cold for our seats. The show was great. We also ate out at two lovely restaurants: Momofuku Ssam Bar and Scarpetta. Both were chosen by Mike and were examples of his excellent taste. My only argument with Scarpetta is their tasting menu for 2 provided enough food for 4 and we had to lay down after in a place we were sure nothing or no one would touch our distended bellies.

We came back to a happy Ellis. She had a great time with Pops. In fact, she announced to me that: "I stayed with Pops when you were on your trip!" And when it was time for Pops to leave, she insisted that he could stay at our house. It felt indulgent to go off on our own and a little strange. Having Ellis around us is natural, so it took some getting used to. But knowing she was with my dad and having a great time made it easy for us to have a good time.
