Boxes and School Work
Mike got a new suit that came in a huge box, which turned into opportunity for great fun.
I thought it would be nice to show some of the kids' assignments from school. First up are three examples of Anders' play planning. These are from the beginning of the year and he has come a really long way since then. For one, he is working on his last name now and "I am going to..." This is part of the Tools of the Mind curriculum, the goal of which is to give kids the self-regulatory and social-emotional skills to succeed in school and learn.
Their classroom has four stations along a theme, like your house, vacation, or errands. The kids negotiate who is playing where (there is only room for 4 kids in each station) and then decide what they are going to do. They draw a picture of it and tell the teacher what they are going to do so he/she can write it out. As the kids develop, they start writing some of it themselves. Then they execute their plan over 45 minutes of play.
You wouldn't expect that 16 3-5 year olds could play in one place for 45 minutes, but they do. It is amazing to watch.
A lot of the classes are coordinated. So some of this art is from Ellis' science class and some is a lesson from science brought to art class.
Ellis class has been focussing more on social studies. This is the British attack of Fort McHenry and she also has a great drawing of the Uncle Sam poster.
Back to Anders. In music class, they learned about ABA form music...
This is from science class.
And this is just free time drawing. It is Anders and all of the things he does at school.
